A Victory for the Odd Socks – LoveWins

If you would consider yourself to be a bit of an odd sock, there’s a good chance you’ve been bullied at one stage or another in your life.

At every corner you step, there’s something, someone, telling you how you should be. If you don’t fit into that mould, you’re being wrong. It’s tough to be you in a world that is incessantly encouraging you to be somebody else.

Gay children, gay men, gay women, and those whose gender remains a sort of fluid mystery, have for years and years, since the dawn of humanity, been discriminated against and bullied in numerous parts of the world. Purely for their sexuality, they have been cast odd socks.

Strange. Unusual. Out of the ordinary.

And for years and years, bullying this particular minority – the LGBT odd socks – has been institutionalised.

Strange. Unusual. Out of the ordinary.

And illegal.

Unfortunately in the Odd Sock’s hometown, the LGBT community is still denied the equality that’s shared by the Heterosexual Socks when it comes to having their love legally recognised. In Australia, institutionalised bullying of this particular sort is still rigidly in place.

But today, the American Supreme Court has just taken a giant step forward in the righ… direction of odd.

They have ruled that the US Constitution guarantees a right to same sex marriage.

This ruling is not just a victory for the LGBT community in America. It’s not just a victory for the LGBT community around the world, or just for the families of gay people, for the friends of gay people, or for the supporters of gay rights, for those who believe in equality at its most fundamental core.

It’s a victory for all people who have ever been made to feel wrong or bad or strange – odd – just for being themselves. This ruling is a victory for odd socks all over the world, who have been courageous enough to dare to be as they are.

Go you, America. Today, we at the odd Sock applaud you.

To borrow the words of Charlie Chaplin…

I should like to help everyone – if possible – Jew, Gentile – black man – white – (gay or straight). Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness – not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful but we have lost the way.

Always remember: It’s Normal to be Odd

The end.
